《世界小史》在1935年10月成书，1985年9月贡布里希补入了这本书新版的最后一章，即第40章的内容。半个世纪间，此书被查禁过，贡布里希也曾经颠沛流离，欧洲曾经化为一片瓦砾，整个世界也经历了一场前所未有的大战，直到作者重新为本书加写这个结尾时，整个世界仍处于冷战高峰期。

本书将人类的历史进程分为七个阶段，每个阶段都有自己最为重要的主题。
